The FPA General Assembly approved two new grant applications.
Kacper Donat aka kadet will work on a new feature preview system that can be used in Part and Part Design. Whenever you need to apply Pad or Loft or any other command, you will get a transparent preview of what you are getting right in the viewport.

Development already started weeks ago, the plan is to complete it by the end of 2024. Kacper was awarded a grant of EUR 1,500.
This is the first part of a larger project intended to unify Part and Part Design. Further planned stages, that are out of scope for this grant, are:
- Add more multi solid capabilities to Part Design
- Allow using features from other workbenches in Part Design workbench
- Merge duplicated features together (Extrude / Pad / Pocket, Chamfer, Fillet etc.)
Dr. Rajeevlochana G. Chittawadigi, Dr. Ravi Kumar V., and Dr. Mohan Kumar S. will develop a Sketcher addon for teaching how to use the workbench. Users will follow step-by-step instructions, and the wizard will highlight mistakes (if any) after each step. The project deliverables are spread across 9 months. The team was awarded a grant of USD 6,000 (to be paid to one representative in three steps).

Awesome! Nice to see we are working towards unifying Parts and PD! it’s going to make things easier for newcomers and hopefully veterans as well. Also perhaps less maintenance complexity.
I love FreeCAD. Thank you all, for all the hard work and time you put in.
This remembers me of how Linkstage3 displays the same operations. It also had a similar ‘live preview mode’ when making fillets and chamfrs that might be worth porting
Yes, and RT said that it’s hard to isolate that feature from the rest of the code because it’s intertwined with his toponaming code.
In the Part Design environment, the biggest problem are features Thickness and Draft. It is not possible to do elementary shapes with these tools.
Thanks to all the team and contributors. Do you accept donations through Bitcoin ?
I think you are supposed to be able to donate BTC on OpenCollective, but I’m not sure: https://opencollective.com/freecad
Unifying Part and PartDesign is a game changer in terms of discoverability for new users! Has there been talks of doing something similar for the 2D workbenches? Draft has so many idiosyncrasies and a clunky UX compared to the rest of FreeCAD, causing me to write it off as complete legacy code when I was new. But I’ve learned that it still has some useful tools (not even 2D-specific!) that I wouldn’t have discovered at all without watching tutorials.
You’re all doing amazing work, in any case! Congratulations to the grant applicants!
